Severe winter losses, which may have been due to the lack of air circulation. The structure of the hive bottom was changed to test new easier management. Summer has been the worst for over 50 years, cold and endless rain. It is a miracle that some queens have managed to mate. Queen rearing was made from some Mini-Plus test hives to make small series of new promising material. The idea of the new managing system (ROOTS) is that all hives make their own queens. All hives are equally allowed to make drones for matings. One of the queen rearing hives had brood disease to test for claimed AFB resistance of our queens. Acceptance in this hive was equally good, but ended with 10 to 30% rotten cells, which did not emerge.
There was no varroa treatment in year 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010 or 2009. The last treatment was 2008 with 3 ml oxalic acid, which killed about 10% of the mites.
